Air Filter Substitution
As you can see in the day zero picture in this article, the air filter was the wrong size when we got it. Well, what we really needed was a filter that fit on the small center disk. It turned out that there was a top for the air filter assembly in the trunk. I took this down to the local auto parts store. Of course, finding an air filter for a 1963 Rambler American was difficult. I decided to be creative. One filter that looked like it might work well was a Fram CA3924. It was the only one in stock that had a smaller diameter. This filter is also in the 1985 Chevy Citation 2.8L V6 MFI, as well as other GM products. So, I can probably get this filter in the future as well. I had to do a little welding to get the bracket for the air filter to screw on correctly. I purchased a universal air cleaner hold-down kit. Search for part number 41066 at this site for the exact part I used. I cut the old bolt off of the bracket, welded the longer bolt on the bracket, and cut it to size.
