Replacing the 196 OHV Choke Heat Tube
The choke heat tube that goes from the choke valve to the exhaust manifold was broken off. You can see a picture of it in this article. I took the old one to NAPA, figuring that they would just have some plain old steel tubing that would work. I've never really done much with tubing. I will have to rework the brake lines on Ruby eventually, but for now she is OK. Anyway, after much thumbing through pages, the clerk told me they didn't have anything like that and to go someplace else. I asked where the brake lines were, and could I check them. I had a suspicion that there wouldn't be different kinds of metal tubing on an old Rambler. It turns out that 1/4" brake line did work just fine, even the flange fit the carburetor fitting. I just cut off the end:
The NAPA part number was 813-1221, but I'm sure you can get this just about anywhere. If you can find it pre-flanged, that is pretty handy. I got a 20" length, which was more than enough. Here you can see the old and new tubing:
A tubing bender was nice; however, the bend needs to be quite a bit closer to the fitting than I could get with the bender, so I had to improvise, which did mar up the tubing a wee bit, but it works fine:
