'65 AMC 196 OHV Water Pump
The water pump inlets and outlets do change in a variety of ways. I'll compare the '63 and '65 pumps in a later article. Here is the water pump just after removal:

There was a relatively new sticker that said the pump had a new shaft, seal, and bearings. I believe that this is a recently rebuilt pump, although through engine trauma or just plain neglect, it has aged a lot in the last five years:
I believe that this hole is normal. We'll see. Regardless, the picture of the water pump's maw is disturbing:
