Replacing Wheel Studs

We had some very worn out studs on the left, front hub of our new 440H Rambler American. It is fairly easy to replace these. We used Dorman number 610-092, 1/2-20 X 1-5/16" wheel studs. Spray the studs with WD-40 so that it is easier to drive them in:

Just bang out the old studs with a hammer. Be careful you only hit the stud. Put in new studs with washers and tighten with reversed lugnuts as you remove the old wheel studs, or the hub will separate from the drum:

We mainly used the washer so we didn't hurt the drum as we clamped down. With the drum on, the wide part of the stud does not poke through, so you don't have to use a stack of larger washers. When you finish hammering out the old studs, clamp down the drum and hub so you can tighten the lugnuts to set the wheel stud into the hub:

Here are some pictures of the installed wheel studs:

This site is intended as documentation of our experiences in fixing up our 1963 Rambler American. We put up the pictures, resources we run across, and documentation of our experiences, because we wish there was more of this on the web. There are many amateurs out there fixing up their old cars as well, and perhaps sharing our adventures will help. Copyright 2004-2008 FixRambler.com.
